White House asks SCOTUS for Title 42 expiration after Christmas

The Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to end Title 42 but not until after Christmas.

After the Supreme Court said the Title 42 border restrictions should temporarily stay in place, the Biden administration asked for that pause to extend at least until Dec 27 after Christmas. Republican states want the policy to stay in place even longer.

The president had asked the nation’s high court to reject a GOP-led effort to keep the policy in place, but not until after Christmas.

On Tuesday, Biden requested that the Supreme Court hold off on lifting asylum restrictions at the border until December 27^th. The POTUS cited ongoing preparations at the border for the migrant influx and the holiday weekend.

As the border crisis worsened under Biden’s watch, the White House claimed that Republicans need to do their jobs.

On Monday during a press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the administration is surging resources at the southern border.  However, Congressional Republicans must do their part and pass $3.5 billion in funding as requested by the  Biden administration to help deal with the border amid Title 42’s pending expiration.

“If Republican Congress are serious about protecting the border, if they are serious about securing the border, they are serious about the challenges that we’re currently seeing, that they should be able to be able to get involved here and make sure that the men and women of the department of homeland security have the resources they need,” Jean-Pierre said.

Lawmakers expressed their frustration over the crisis, especially those in border states. Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) believed that the federal government is to blame.

“This crisis is not new,” Sinema said. “It’s one that has progressively worsened year after year, administration after administration due to the federal government’s repeated failures to address our broken border and immigration system.”

Republicans maintain that the White House is putting a band-aid on a big problem and it is only asking for a delay so it can blame the new Republican majority for the continuing border chaos.

Title 42 was invoked by 45th President Donald Trump during the COVID pandemic and allowed the government to quickly expel migrants.

With the lifting of the public health policy, migrants flocked to the border in hopes of a better chance at seeking asylum. Border cities are bracing for the migrant influx, as Title 42 hangs in the balance.
