Lauryn Hill Tops Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums List

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” is now considered the greatest album ever released on Apple Music.

The music streaming service’s first “100 Best Albums” list was made public over the course of 10 days when it was unveiled last week.

Hill released her first and only solo album in 1998. Apple Music called it “a stunningly raw, profound look into the spiritual landscape, not just of one of the era’s biggest stars, but of the era itself.”

The hits “Doo Wop (That Thing),” “Ex-Factor,” and “Everything Is Everything” are all from that particular album.

According to the streaming service, the list was compiled by “Apple Music experts and a handful of artists,” including Maren Morris, Pharrell Williams, J Balvin, Charli XCX, Mark Hoppus, Honey Dijon, and Nia Archives. Producers, songwriters, and other business experts also offered their opinions. However, Apple Music did not identify any particular members of these groups.

The Grammys website stated that Hill became the first woman to win five Grammys in a single night in 1999 for the album. She won awards for best R&B album, best new artist, and album of the year.

In a video that Apple Music and Hill shared on Wednesday, the artist accepted the award.

“This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love,” the Fugees singer said. “This is our celebration.”

Apple Music’s No. 2 song was “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, while the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” came in at No. 3. The songs “Purple Rain” by Prince & The Revolution and “Blonde” by Frank Ocean completed the top five.

The albums “Songs in the Key of Life” by Stevie Wonder, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” by Kendrick Lamar, “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, “Nevermind” by Nirvana, and “Lemonade” by Beyoncé are among the others that made the top 10.

The top 100 ranking, according to a press release from Apple Music last week, is “an editorial statement, fully independent of any streaming numbers.” The compilation was referred to as “a love letter to the records that have shaped the world music lovers live in and listen in.”
