Bond Set At $1M for Drunk-Driver Who Struck 16 Family Members, Killing 2, In Hit-And-Run

Two people were fatally struck and 14 others were injured in a hit-and-run crash in Watertown Township, Michigan.

Deputies said 16 family members were crossing the street in Clinton County Saturday evening, when a drunk driver came barreling through. 

The Sheriff’s office identified the driver as 35-year-old Ashley Monroe on Monday. 

She was arraigned on 11 counts in connection with the fatal wreck and given a $1 million bond.

Deputies said Monroe fled the scene of the crash Saturday and was taken into custody shortly after. 

A 30-year-old man and 42-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene.

Eight of the victims were under the age of 16. Police released an update on the victims’ conditions on Monday.

  • 42-year-old deceased male identified as Daniel Harris
  • 38-year-old female in critical condition
  • 61-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 36-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 33-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 32-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 28-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 16-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 8-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 7-year-old male with non-life threatening injuries
  • 6-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 6-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 3-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries
  • 2-year-old male with non-life threatening injuries
  • 2-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries

Residents said the Clinton County community is grieving together.

“Whole family, grandbabies—we all prayed, and we’re all going to pray as a family just like we did last night. We’re here if you need anything,” Maggie Parwey told WILX-TV.

Monroe appeared in court for the first time on Monday.

Her charges include:

  • 2 Counts of Operating while Intoxicated causing death
  • 2 Counts of Failure to stop at scene of accident when at fault causing death
  • 6 Counts of Operating while Intoxicated causing serious injury
  • 1 Counts of Failure to stop at scene of accident resulting in serious impairment or death.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the crash.
