Far-left Democrat Cori Bush is reportedly under investigation by the Department of Justice for misspending funds set aside for her personal security.

The grand jury subpoena was delivered to the House of Representatives on Monday, according to Punchbowl News.

Bush (D-Mo.), who has been an advocate for the “Defund the police” movement, had her spending come under scrutiny in 2022 after she paid $60,000 to her now-husband, Cortney Merritts, to provide “security services” for her.

Additionally, during the same time, FEC records revealed that Bush’s campaign was paying over $225,000 to a St. Louis-based firm called PEACE Security and another $50,000 to another security guard named Nathaniel Davis.

According to Fox News, in February 2023 Merritts was paid in spite of holding a private security license, which has been required by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department since 2012.

Furthermore, the outlet also reported that Merrits was not licensed as a security official for the District of Columbia.

According to the FEC, campaigns can only make payments to family members for “bona fide” services.

Bush also dropped close to $500,000 on private security during her first two years in office.

“I’m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life and I have too much work to do,” Bush told CBS News in August 2021. “So, if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend … 10 more dollars on it, you know what? I get to be here to do the work.”

The “Defund the police” advocate is campaigning for her third term this year and faces a tough challenge against St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell.

A spokesperson for Bush and the Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation Tuesday.
