During a press briefing at the Capitol on Tuesday, Johnson (R-La.) accused Biden of “pretending not to know” as president that he has the power to enact executive orders to assist in border enforcement.

The Senate is reportedly in the closing days of a border-Ukraine funding deal. However, it has drawn criticism from House Republicans.

In particular, one measure supposedly attached to the bill would enable the president to close the southern border after 5,000 entries a day. Nevertheless, Johnson said the goal should be “zero.”

Speaker Johnson pointed to the Trump presidency as an example of the executive taking immediate action to maintain control of the border.

He added that Trump foresaw the situation that the country now faces.
