1 Adult, 4 Children Dead In West Virginia House Fire

Five people have died, including four children, as a result of a house fire that occurred in West Virginia over the weekend.

On Saturday at approximately 5 a.m., four children and one adult were killed, along with another person injured, after a house fire in Hardy County, West Virginia.

The fire occurred on Woods Edge Road near Mathias, according to a press release published by the Office of the West Virginia State Fire Marshal.

The fire was initially reported around 5 a.m. on Saturday when Hardy County received a 9-1-1 call regarding the fire.

According to the Mathias-Baker Volunteer Fire Department, when crews arrived at the house, it was “fully engulfed in flames.”

The press release stated that the adult who died was 28-years-old and children who died were all between the ages of one and five years of age. 

The five deceased bodies were taken to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and positive identification.

According to the Go Fund Me link that was established for the family, the victims who died in the fire included 28-year-old Hunter and the four children were identified as Grayson, Bucklee, Abilene, and Jayce.

The other individual involved was a woman named Candi Strawderman who had the ability to escape the fire and was transported to a medical facility in the area with minor injuries.

The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office announced that due to the extensive damage to the building, the cause of the fire was declared unknown. 

The Fire Marshal also reported that no fire alarms were found among the debris in the house.
