Gavin Newsom Says Keeping Trump Off California 2024 Ballot Could Be 'Political Distraction'

In a surprising statement, California Governor Gavin Newsom has been critical of the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that took former President Donald Trump off the primary ballot.

Newsome (D-Calif.) said in a statement on Friday that in his state it will be done the right way at the polls.

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” he said. “But in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”

With the recent ruling other states are beginning to follow suit and are exploring the idea of getting rid of Trump from their ballots.

In Newsom’s state, the move to ban Trump began after Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis (D-Calif.) asked Sacramento’s Secretary of State to follow what Colorado did.

“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot,” Kounalakis wrote to Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

Currently, the order against Trump is pending a final decision from the Supreme Court.
