Johnson (R-La.) made the announcement on Friday, saying there will be over 40,000 hours of Capitol security footage from January 6th

“This decision will provide millions of Americans, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media an ability to see for themselves what happened that day, rather than having to rely upon the interpretation of a small group of government officials,” Johnson said in announcing the website, where videos will be posted throughout the weekend.

The new House Speaker said that the faces of private citizens will be blurred on any unreleased tapes and around 5% of the footage will be deleted due to security concerns.

Additionally, close to 90 of the 40,000 hours appeared online on Friday and the full release is expected to be uploaded on Monday.

Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who oversees the footage, said that the film will be available on the Committee on House Administration’s website for viewing.

The move to release the footage comes after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had faced much backlash for not immediately releasing January 6th footage to the public, instead offering it to then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
