On Tuesday, Julio Chavez Rodriguez, the manager of Biden’s campaign, announced that the 46th president’s name will not appear on the New Hampshire ballot, opting out of a race that the state intends to hold in defiance of a reformed primary order supported by the White House.

Rodriguez wrote a letter to the New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley stating that “while the president wishes to participate in the primary, he is obligated to comply” with party rules.

“The president looks forward to having his name on New Hampshire’s general election ballot as the nominee of the Democratic Party after officially securing the nomination at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where he will tirelessly campaign to earn every single vote in the Granite State next November,” Rodriguez wrote.

Last year, Biden pushed the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to reschedule the 2024 primary, substituting Iowa’s leadoff caucus with the South Carolina primary in order to “better empower Black and other minority voters who are critical to the party’s base.”

The DNC authorized a new 2024 timetable in February, beginning with South Carolina’s primary on February 3rd, followed by New Hampshire and Nevada three days later.

However, New Hampshire has objected to the proposal, claiming that it has traditionally held the nation’s first primary which is a requirement that Iowa only avoided by holding caucuses.

According to top New Hampshire Democrats, state law requires the state to host the nation’s first primary, and officials have sworn to have a primary before South Carolina’s regardless of what the DNC says.

The DNC has cautioned that such a move would result in an unofficial primary, perhaps costing New Hampshire delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 2024.

Meanwhile, even during an unofficial primary, New Hampshire voters will be able to write in Biden’s name, and several of the state’s leading Democrats have launched an operation to encourage write-in support for the president.

In response to Biden’s Decision, Buckley released a statement on X (Twitter).

“The reality is that Joe Biden will win the New Hampshire first-in-the-nation primary in January, win renomination in Chicago and will be re-elected next November,” he said.
