Police tape blocks off the street near Schemengees Bar and Grille in Lewiston, Maine, on October 27, 2023, in the aftermath of a mass shooting. Hundreds of police in the US state of Maine hunted October 26, 2023 for a fugitive gunman who killed 18 people at a bowling alley and a bar, as President Joe Biden mourned “yet another senseless and tragic mass shooting.” Police named the suspect as 40-year-old Robert Card — seen in surveillance footage pointing a semi-automatic rifle as he walked into the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley. A tissue sample from the brain of Robert Card, the man who killed 18 people and wounded 13 others in Maine, has been sent to a Massachusetts lab to be examined for indications of injury linked to his time serving in the military.

On Monday, officials announced that a tissue sample from the brain of a gunman who murdered 18 people and injured 13 others has been delivered to a laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts, in order to be analyzed for signs of injury or trauma possibly connected to his service in the Army Reserves.

The effort to find any signs of damage in Card’s brain was ordered by the Maine Office of Chief Medical Examiner.

To determine whether brain damage from his work as a grenade instructor contributed to the psychological collapse of the Maine mass shooter, medical scientists have sent brain tissue samples to an independently-run research lab located at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Card, who was a 40-year-old military instructor, murdered 18 people and injured 13 others in the October 25th mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. The shootings occured in a bowling alley and at a bar in the Lewiston area.

Two days after the shootings took place, Card’s body was discovered in a nearby town. A medical examiner concluded that Card had taken his own life.

The tragedy was named the deadliest in Maine’s history and immediately generated questions regarding Card’s mental health and previous life history as someone who served in the military.

A spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office described the additional steps in the investigation as a topic of thoroughness “due to the combined history of military experience and actions.”

“In an event such as this, people are left with more questions than answers. It is our belief that if we can conduct testing (in-house or outsourced) that may shed light on some of those answers, we have a responsibility to do that,” Lindsey Chasteen, the medical examiner’s office administrator, wrote in an email.

The tissue samples were delivered to a laboratory at Boston University that primarily focuses on problems related to brain trauma, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

The problems focused on Card’s exposure to ongoing explosions while instructing cadets in the United States Military Academy, where he dealt with firearms, anti-tank weapons, and grenades at West Point, New York.

He was also hospitalized after dealing with multiple psychotic episodes and even told certain colleagues that he had been “hearing voices.” Additionally, Card had threatened those at the military base where he was stationed.

Card’s family stated that prior to spending two weeks in the hospital last summer at West Point for reservist training, he was acting in a “paranoid and delusional manner.”

Card’s fellow soldiers began to act suspicious, enough so that his access to guns was limited when he left the hospital. His fellow servicemen told superiors that he was acting “erratically” and was a possible risk to himself and the community.

As a result, military academy officials asked law enforcement to get involved, however, Card was eventually freed from the hospital and permitted to carry on as an Army Reservist.

An autopsy has revealed that the gunman responsible for the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine that took the lives of 18 people and left 13 more injured was alive for most of a widespread two-day search.

On Friday, the state medical examiner’s office reported that physical signs from the autopsy indicate that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot that “likely” occurred eight to 12 hours before his body was discovered.

This indicates that the gunman, an Army reservist who was trained on how to use assault weapons, was most likely alive during the majority of the search that followed the mass shooting.

Officials say his body was discovered on the property of his former employer at a recycling center.

According to police records, another Army reservist who knew the gunman personally, had warned authorities about a month prior, saying he feared the future killer would “snap.”

The records show that the staff sergeant spoke with police about the gunman’s “erratic” behavior and violent threats.

In a text, the sergeant wrote, “He still has all of his weapons. I believe he’s going to snap and do a mass shooting.”

Following the devastating events on October 25th, tens of thousands of local residents took refuge in their homes, securing their doors as thousands of law enforcement teams worked to locate the killer. He was found dead at around 7:45 p.m. ET on Friday evening.

On October 31st, Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine.) visited the Family Assistance Center in Lewiston, where she extended her appreciation to the dedicated Federal, State, and local personnel who have been delivering comprehensive support to the victims affected by the shooting.

The Mills Administration, in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney General, the FBI, and the Red Cross, established the center to serve as a centralized hub where victims and their families can access a wide range of services, including mental health counseling, financial aid, spiritual guidance, legal assistance, and victim advocacy.

During her visit, Governor Mills conveyed her gratitude to the volunteers, many of whom have traveled from other states, for their unwavering commitment to providing assistance during this challenging period.

“This outpouring of support, and their willingness to embrace our state during some of our most difficult days, is further proof that all of Maine and all of the nation stands firmly in support of Lewiston. We are so grateful for, and will never forget, this kindness and compassion,” she said.

In response to the overwhelming support from the community on October 25th, the City of Lewiston has established a dedicated place for both local residents and those from other areas in the United States to support the affected families and victims.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden made a somber visit to Maine, offering their condolences to a shaken community in the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting that killed 18 people and left 13 others injured.

On a Friday afternoon, the Bidens arrived in Lewiston, where they spoke with survivors, the families of the victims, and first responders. Upon arriving, they were met by Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine), Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline, and various local officials.

The visit comes in the wake of an investigation initiated by Governor Mills, aimed at uncovering missed details that could have potentially prevented the shooting. Disturbingly, it came to light that law enforcement had received multiple warnings regarding the shooter’s troubling and threatening behavior prior to the horrific incident.

Authorities revealed that in May of this year, the gunman’s family reached out to the local sheriff, expressing concerns about his mental well-being and raising alarm over his access to firearms.

In September, the Maine National Guard urged local police to conduct a wellness check on the U.S. Army reservist due to mounting fears that he might “snap” and carry out a mass shooting.

The Bidens visited Schemengees Bar, one of the sites associated with the mass shooting. President Biden carried a bouquet of white flowers in one hand and held the First Lady’s hand with the other as they paused at a memorial outside the bar. Amid candles, flowers, and signs, the couple observed a moment of silence to honor the memory of the victims.

Biden delivered remarks at the bowling alley where the gunman first opened fire on October 25th. During his speech, Biden reiterated his plea for more gun control measures.

Newly-released court documents revealed that the gunman believed locals were spreading conspiracies and calling him a “pedophile” at the bowling alley and the bar.

The suspect was found dead on October 27th, after a two-day manhunt that mobilized hundreds of law enforcement agents.

UPDATED 5:23 PM – Tuesday, April 18, 2023

After two shooting events that appear to be connected resulted in at least four fatalities and three injuries, Maine authorities have detained a person of interest and are carrying out further investigations, according to state police.

Four bodies were discovered inside a home in Bowdoin, Maine, when Maine State Police arrived on the scene, according to State Police Lieutenant Randall Keaten, who spoke at a press conference.

“We’ve got vehicles that have been hit by straight gunfire all across that we’re getting reports on, so if anybody has holes in their vehicles, please contact us so that we can follow up with that,” Keaten said.

Shortly after, the Yarmouth region of I-295, which is about 40 minutes from Bowdoin, was the scene of reports of numerous automobiles being struck by gunfire.

According to state police, three people were shot while driving and sent to the hospital. Authorities noted that at least one of those three had a critical condition on Tuesday.

Regarding the detained person of interest, authorities withheld any details.

The four people who were discovered deceased in the house were not mentioned by the police, nor did they provide any information about a potential motive for the incidents. According to state police, the four remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be performed to determine the manner and cause of death.

Authorities are now requesting contact from anyone who may have seen something or may know something about the incidents on Tuesday morning.
