The Maine State Police Department has sent a warning to people living in Maine’s second largest city to stay inside as an active shooter is currently on the loose.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on social media platforms that authorities in Maine are investigating two active shooter events. A suspect currently remains at large.

“We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said.

At this time, law enforcement is urging people to stay inside and lock their doors. The city of Lewiston has issued a shelter-in-place.

“Please stay off the streets and allow law enforcement to diffuse the situation. If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911,” it reads.

A text was also sent out by Lewiston Public Schools asking anyone near or at the schools for conferences to get in a safe place.

Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine.) released a statement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to be aware and follow the directions of authorities.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
