Republicans Nominate Mike Johnson For House Speaker

Republicans made their fourth pick in just two weeks to replace the ousted speaker of the US House of Representatives, underlining the chaos engulfing the fragmented party after three previous nominees failed to win the gavel. Louisiana's Mike Johnson won an internal party vote just hours after previous nominee, Majority Whip Tom Emmer, buckled under a backlash led by former president Donald Trump and announced his withdrawal. GOP members have decided on another nominee to become House Speaker.

Republican Mike Johnson (R-La.) won the nomination on Tuesday night, beating out Republican Byron Donalds and becoming the fourth speaker designate selected by his party after the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)

The nomination came just hours after Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), dropped out of the race after it was clear he would not be able to receive 217 votes for the majority. Over 20 lawmakers opposed voting for him during a roll-call vote, and former President Donald Trump was critical of Emmer being the nominee.

Trump also said in a Truth Social post it was his “strong SUGGESTION” to make Johnson the speaker.

In a separate vote after nominating Johnson, no Republican said they would vote against him on the House Floor.

“This House Republican majority is united,” Johnson said at a news conference Tuesday night after his victory, with dozens of his colleagues. “We’re going to serve the people of this country. We’re going to restore their faith in Congress, this institution of government. America is the last, best hope of man on the Earth. Abraham Lincoln said it, Ronald Reagan used to remind us all the time, and we’re here to remind you of that, again.”

“This group here is ready to govern and we’re going to govern well,” he continued. “You’re going to see this group looking to work like a well-oiled machine. We owe that to the American people.”

Johnson was first elected to Congress in 2016 and voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

It has now been three weeks since the House has been without an elected speaker, which means it has not been able to pass legislation for the ongoing war in Israel.

A vote is expected to take place on Wednesday.
