Former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has teased the launch of his new cryptocurrency, ironically titled $LAPTOP, in reference to his notorious laptop that became a political controversy during the 2020 presidential election season.
Biden made the announcement of his next business venture on Monday, writing on X, “$LATPOP September 9.”
The post also included a 30-second video composed of podcasters, political commentators and politicians discussing the “laptop from Hell,” as President Donald Trump referred to it.
“For years, Trump and right-wing media have been asking, ‘Where’s Hunter? Where’s Hunter?’ Well, here I am. Clear, strong, seven years sober, and with a lot to say,” Biden stated in a lengthier post issued on Tuesday.
“By now, you may have seen the article in the Wall Street Journal that I’m launching a meme coin called $LAPTOP,” he continued. “The symbol they used to try to end me is now a symbol of resilience, redemption, and recovery.”
Meme coins are not backed by underlying protocols. They instead derive value from social media popularity and viral trends, making them unpredictable assets.
One billion $Laptop tokens are expected to be issued, with 30% held by Biden and the coin’s founders. 20% of the tokens will be distributed to holders who lost money on President Trump’s $TRUMP meme coin, which Biden called a “grift.”
In a July Substack message, Biden opened up about the laptop, which recorded his struggles with addiction.
“So. The laptop. Here is what was on it. Twenty years of my life, or a version of it,” he wrote on X. “Messages sent at hours that don’t belong to anyone sober. Photographs I would never have taken in daylight. A record of every way a body can fail its owner when the owner has stopped trying to help. None of it is a single dramatic moment. It is accumulation, the slow daily work of an addict doing the thing that is killing him because the alternative feels like dying faster.”
“All of that was on it,” he said. “I am not denying any of it.”
The laptop became a major media dispute in the final weeks of the 2020 presidential election because it involved questions about the then-presidential candidate’s knowledge of his son’s foreign business dealings and censorship of information that may have been relevant to the election.
The issues stemmed from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI’s) subpoena of Biden’s laptop after it was left at a repair shop in Delaware. The laptop was reported to contain information about Biden’s work with Ukrainian energy company Burisma, in addition to scandalous personal affairs. X, formally known as Twitter, and Facebook both restricted users from sharing a New York Post report about the laptop’s contents.
