President Donald Trump brushed off rising online speculation surrounding the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, stating on Tuesday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is “wasting their time” if they are investigating foul play or “conspiracy theories” rather than accepting the medical examiner’s preliminary findings of a natural heart condition.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office during a bilateral meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Trump sought to dismiss rumors that the South Carolina Republican was targeted by foreign adversaries. Graham, 71, died suddenly over the weekend after what his office initially described as a brief illness.
A preliminary finding from the Washington, D.C., medical examiner’s office later revealed that his death was caused by an aortic dissection — a tear in the wall of the body’s main artery — linked to cardiovascular disease.
The sudden nature of the tragedy, coming immediately after Graham’s trip to Ukraine where he announced an agreement with the Trump administration to pursue a new package of sanctions against Russia, triggered a wave of unverified claims online.
Speculation intensified after FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Sunday that the bureau was assisting local authorities.
On Monday, roughly 20 federal agents and Capitol Police officers were photographed conducting work at Graham’s private Washington residence. When asked by reporters why the FBI had deployed resources to investigate the scene, the president emphasized that Graham’s health issues were hereditary.
Referring to Graham’s father, who died of a heart attack at age 69, Trump remarked, “Well, I don’t know why, because I think, you know, he had a problem. His father had a very similar problem, as you know.”
Trump, who had a close but occasionally complicated relationship with the longtime foreign policy hawk, added that he had asked White House physicians to explain the precise mechanism of Graham’s death. Trump noted that the condition was fundamentally different from the standard cardiovascular blockages the senator had previously managed.
“At first, I heard it was clogged arteries. Because he did have clogged arteries. He had a problem with that,” Trump told reporters. “But what happened is actually something that’s very hard to detect. It was not related to any blockage.”
According to Trump, White House medical experts confirmed that there was little that could have been done once the life-threatening tear occurred.
“This is something that is very, almost, undetectable, and if it happens, there’s not much you can do about it,” the president said. “Sounds unfortunate, but there’s not much you can do about it. If you look at his father died of the same thing at about the same age, so there was not much. They say it’s almost undetectable.”
Trump subsequently urged federal law enforcement to steer clear of online rumors and assassination speculation, labeling any focus on those theories as a poor use of government resources. “So I don’t see a lot of evil there,” Trump said. “I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing it.”
Law enforcement sources later suggested that the federal presence at Graham’s home was a “standard precautionary measure” given his stature as a high-ranking lawmaker and his deep involvement in sensitive international affairs.
While the FBI has declined to elaborate further on its activities, Governor Henry McMaster (R-S.C.) has already taken steps to ensure continuity in the Senate, appointing Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, to temporarily fill the vacant seat until a special election can be held.
