Iran launched a slew of drones and ballistic missiles at its neighboring nations in the Gulf region, leading to the death of one person and the injuries of dozens of others, Kuwaiti officials confirmed.
According to the General Staff Headquarters of the Kuwait Army, Iran launched 13 ballistic missiles and 17 drones into Kuwaiti airspace, with targets including civilian facilities. It noted that the interception of the missiles occurred “over several residential areas, resulting in the fall of some debris.”
“This Iranian criminal aggression resulted in the targeting of civilian and vital facilities, including Kuwait International Airport, leading to the death of an Indian expatriate and injuries to several individuals, in addition to significant material damage,” the Kuwait Army posted to X in Arabic on Wednesday.
The Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) also acknowledged the attack on their Arabic language X account, stating that one person had died and dozens of civilians were injured.
In total since the beginning of hostilities, Iran has launched 15 cruise missiles, 372 ballistic missiles and 869 drones into Kuwait airspace, the Kuwait Army claimed.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) recognized Iranian attacks targeting U.S. forces in Kuwait in a Tuesday social media post. However, CENTCOM claimed the attacks “failed to impact intended targets tonight.” It further stated that its air defenses downed multiple drones and that “no American personnel or assets were harmed.”
In a statement given shortly before, CENTCOM said that “U.S. forces successfully defeated multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, and conducted self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East, June 2.”
“Iran launched several ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors; however, all failed to hit their intended targets,” the command stated.
“Two Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait fell short or broke apart enroute, and three missiles launched at Bahrain were immediately intercepted by U.S. and Bahrain air defense forces,” it continued.
CENTCOM stated that moments before, its forces had shot down three one-way Iranian attack drones, which it asserted were launched “toward civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters.” It also added that the U.S. “conducted self-defense strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island.”
“No U.S. personnel were harmed,” the command said decidedly. “CENTCOM forces remain vigilant and ready to defend against unwarranted Iranian aggression during the ongoing ceasefire.”
The Kuwait MOFA, in Arabic, explained that the attacks, besides the cost to human life and safety, also resulted in the “material damage to vital facilities and diplomatic premises.”
On Wednesday, the ministry, represented by Ambassador Hamad Sulaiman Al-Masha’an, the deputy minister of the MOFA, presented an official protest “regarding the ongoing Iranian aggressions” to the chargé d’affaires ad interim at the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait, Counselor Hamed Hamid Yaqoubi Far. The MOFA also stated that it elected to reduce the Iranian Embassy personnel present in the country and “to declare two members of the Iranian diplomatic mission persona non grata, demanding their departure from the territory of the State of Kuwait within a maximum period of 24 hours.”
“His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs renewed the State of Kuwait’s condemnation and denunciation in the strongest terms of the sinful Iranian attacks,” the MOFA stated, continuing, “affirming Kuwait’s categorial rejection of the use of its territories or airspace for any hostile acts against any state, stressing that the baseless Iranian claims are devoid of truth and unsupported by any evidence….”
The Kuwait Army offered its sympathies to the family of the deceased individual, as well as wishes for the recovery of those injured.
“We extend our sincere condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased and his relatives, and we wish a speedy recovery to all the injured,” it stated.
The minister of defense, Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, visited those injured during the Iranian attacks and wished “them a speedy recovery and continued health and well-being.”
CENTCOM also posted on Tuesday that the claim by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that they struck U.S. headquarters in Bahrain and a regional U.S. air base was false.
“All Iranian attacks on American forces failed. U.S. forces remain vigilant and ready to defend against unwarranted Iranian aggression,” the command said.
