Six states have filed lawsuits against the Biden administration over the administration’s attempt to cancel student loan debt. The states that have filed lawsuits include Nebraska, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, South Carolina and Arizona.
Attorney General Leslie Rutledge (R-Ark.) spoke about the lawsuit on Thursday.
“President Biden’s unlawful political play puts the self-wrought college-loan debt on the backs of millions of hardworking Americans who are struggling to pay their utility bills and home loans in the midst of Biden’s inflation,” Rutledge said. “President Biden does not have the power to arbitrarily erase the college debt of adults who chose to take out those loans.”
The lawsuit filed in federal court alleged that the administration’s actions are illegal. It claims that the administration is trying to use the pandemic as grounds to cancel loan debt. Critics pointed out that in a 60 Minutes interview, Biden recently declared the COVID-19 pandemic to be over.
Meanwhile, the plan is intended to cancel up to $20,000 of debt per individual. It is estimated to cost $400 billion over the next 30 years if it succeeds.
