One adult and two juvenile suspects were apprehended by San Francisco police after allegedly carrying out a violent robbery of a 70-year old Asian woman in broad daylight.

During a press conference on Monday, Police Chief William Scott announced the arrest of 18-year old Darryl Moore alongside two juvenile accomplices. A fourth suspect is still on the run from authorities.

“A robbery unit led the investigation and developed information that identified the suspect in the robbery as 18-year-old Oakland resident Darryll Moore and three juvenile suspects, ages 11, 13 and 14,” said Scott. “You heard me right, 11, 13 and 14, which is really, really sad.”

Scott announced that the incident took place on July 31 in the city’s Anza Vista neighborhood. Moore, alongside his three juvenile partners, allegedly followed the woman into her apartment complex where they proceeded to beat her after which they took all the items she had on person before running away.

This attack comes amidst an increase in anti-Asian hate crimes, which have increased by more than 339 percent since 2021.

“But let me tell you a little bit about this case,” said Scott. “On July 31, 2022, at approximately 5:02 p.m., Central Station officers responded to the 100 block of Francisco Street on a report of a robbery. Officers located a 70-year-old female victim. The victim said she was standing in front of a building when she was approached by four juvenile suspects who began talking to her. Due to a language barrier, the victim did not know what the suspects were saying. When the victim turned to enter the lobby of the building, the suspects followed her, physically attacked her, stole their property and fled the scene.”

Meanwhile, the city’s District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said it was too early to classify this incident as a hate crime. However, she announced that she will work with the SFPD to gather evidence to build a case against Moore who just turned 18.

The 13-year-old will be arraigned in juvenile court but the 11-year-old will not face any kind of criminal prosecution due to his age.

“With respect to hate crimes, they do require the proof of motive. And so that oftentimes requires some expression verbally from an assailant, or it requires some level of investigation into past history, into social media content, other things,” said Jenkins. “So, of course, we will work with SFPD and our own investigators to do a deeper investigation into those other types of evidence. But we will charge this case according to what we can based on the law.”

The victim has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for her physical injuries. She is reportedly still dealing with the psychological trauma of the attack.
