Texas Democrats have introduced a voting law that aims to counter the GOP’s. The bill was announced last week and would commit Texas to automatically registering people to vote upon getting a driver’s license. It would also extend the early voting period.
Senate Bill 61 was named the Barbara Jordan Fair Elections Act in honor of the first Black woman elected to the Texas state Senate. “The act respects Texans’ ability to choose how they would cast their ballot by expanding the use of vote by mail and expanding the early voting period,” said Sen. Royce West (D-Texas).

The Democrats said they want to protect the right to vote from what they claim are Republican efforts to suppress the vote. Democrats also said a second planned walkout would put pressure on Senate Democrats to pass their own voting rights package.
